The typical rent in the United States is around $1,530 per month according to HotPads’ latest rent report. Yet the properties listed below—penthouses, condos, summer homes and mansions—are so costly that $1,530 wouldn’t cover much more than a closet, if that. We searched publicly available listings to find the most expensive available rentals in each state (plus Washington, D.C.). We excluded daily or weekend-only short-term rentals, commercial buildings, corporate retreats and specialty-use properties such as farms or horse barns. Private “off-market” listings may exist that are even pricier, so consider this a snapshot of the most expensive publicly advertised rentals currently on the market.
