The national median rent in the United States is $1,530, according to the latest HotPads rent report. These penthouses, condos, summer homes and mansions dwarf that figure — for many of the rentals below, $1,530 wouldn’t cover a closet, let alone a month’s stay.
We searched public listings across every state plus Washington, D.C., to find the most expensive available residential rentals. We excluded daily or weekend short-term stays, commercial properties, corporate retreats and specialized-use rentals such as farms or barns. Because we relied on publicly searchable databases, private or “off-market” listings may not be included, so even pricier rentals could exist for those with the right connections. Below are the priciest rentals currently listed in each state — judge for yourself whether the price matches the property.
