Some businesses truly are everywhere. Fast-food chains, hotel groups and major coffee brands have built massive physical footprints and highly recognizable products. Many of these long-established companies have maintained their brands and traditions for decades while expanding across regions and continents.

Much of this list consists of franchised businesses. In the United States alone, more than 900,000 franchised locations generate billions in economic output and provide millions of private-sector jobs. The list also includes large company-owned chains that opted to expand under corporate control rather than a franchise model.

To identify brands with the most physical locations, we started with Franchise Direct’s Top 100 Global Franchises list and supplemented those figures with company reports, media coverage and industry sources. Store counts are often estimates and change frequently as locations open and close; the numbers shown reflect the best available information at time of publication. Note: financial institutions and gas stations are excluded.
